Roger Rüegg, ZKB

Age: 30

AuM managed: $1.7 billion

Tenure years: 4.2

Citywire AA-rated Roger Rüegg is a portfolio manager in the quant team of ZKB and runs the SWC (CH) IPF I EF World enhanced NT CHF and SWC (CH) EF World enhanced NT CHF funds.

Before joining Zürcher Kantonalbank in 2011 he studied quantitative finance in ETH & University of Zurich.

Speaking to Citywire Switzerland’s sister website Citywire Selector, Rüegg said trust is the hardest thing for a young portfolio manager to gain.

‘Asset management is a lot about trust. I would say as a young PM it can be hard to convince investors of your experience or skill but as a quant you get credibility with back tests of your ideas and education becomes more and more important.

‘It is hard to be a young person in most senior positions because of the trust factor, not just in asset management but other areas of finance, business and politics. What we can do is emphasise that we have a strong team around us and shared experience, we have a range of ages in our team – as I said it is not just young men doing quant investing – and that is beneficial for both sides.’
