Citywire Switzerland takes a closer look at the five managers who have recently earned an AAA rating.

This January, five outperforming managers have started the year on a high with a new rating, showcasing their sector-leading returns.

The Citywire AAA rating is awarded to front-running portfolio managers who deserve recognition for their winning results.

Heinie Hakker , Kempen & Co

Fund managed: Kempen (Lux) Euro Credit Fund J

On the Euro corporate bonds scene, Heinie Hakker is one of the latest managers to join the AAA-rated circle.

This is largely down to his management of the Kempen (Lux) Euro Credit fund, which he runs alongside AAA-rated managers Rik den Hartog and Alain van der Heijden, as well as Pim van Mourik Broekman.

The fund has a total fund size of €1,832.87 million as of the end of December 2016 and has a large overweight in banks, which represents 29.8% of the portfolio.

Previously, Hakker has worked for Julius Baer, Metzler and Barclays and has been with Kempen Capital Management since 2008.

Over the three years to the end of December 2016, the Kempen (Lux) Euro Credit Fund J returned 0.26, compared with the benchmark Markit iBoxx Euro Corporates TR, which performed -1.51% over the same period.

Dorian Garay Chavez , NN Investment Partners

Fund managed: NN (L) Glob Invest Grade Crdt I Cap EUR

Portfolio manager Dorian Garay has earned his way to an AAA rating through his performance on the NN Investment Partners’ global corporate bonds fund.

Dorian Garay Chavez has managed the fund since its launch in 2012, when he joined NNIP.

The strategy returned 19.69% over the three years to the end of December 2016. This compares to the benchmark, Bloomberg Barclays Global Aggregate Corporate TR’s performance of 18.53% over the same timeframe.

Andre Hämmerli , PMG Fonds Management

Fund managed: PPF - G7 Yield Opportunities Fund USD

Head of asset management at PMG Fonds Management, Andre Hämmerli is one of the latest managers to earn a Citywire AAA rating.

This is down to his performance on the global bond PPF – G7 Yield Opportunities fund, which was launched in 2012.

Hämmerli also runs the PMG Global Markets fund and has over 20 years’ experience in the industry, as he was a former CEO at Macroquant AG.

The PPF – G7 Yield Opportunities fund returned 27.46% over three years to the end of December 2016.

This compares to the benchmark Citi WGBI TR USD’s performance of 11.42% over the same period of time.

Konstantin Leidman , Schroders

Fund managed: Schroder ISF EURO High Yield A Acc

A leading manager in the European high yield bond scene, Konstantin Leidman has earned an AAA rating with his consistent outperformance throughout 2016.

Leidman runs the Schroder ISF EURO High Yield fund, which has a total size of €633.0 million.

Leidman joined Schroders in 2012, after having worked at UBS Global Asset Management (UK) Limited where he was responsible for investment advisory and investment management services.

The fund returned 4.59% over the three years leading up to December 2016, outperforming the BofA Merrill Lynch Euro HY Constrain TR EUR benchmark, which returned 1.27% over the same timeframe.

Ravinder Vashist , Natixis Global Asset Management

Fund managed: IDFC India Equities Fund RE/A (USD)

Ravinder Vashist’s outperformance on the Indian equity fund he runs has won him the AAA label.

The manager has overseen the IDFC India Equities fund since 2004 and worked at the Natixis-affiliate firm IDFC since 2005.

Vashist took over the running of the fund from former manager, Japan Vyas, in January 2014.

The Luxembourg-domiciled fund has returned 44.547% over three years to the end of December 2016, beating the MSCI India TR USD benchmark’s 30.98% over the same timeframe.
