Fabio Paolini , Pictet Asset Management

Fund managed: Pictet-European Equity Selection

Fabio Paolini co-manages the European-focused strategy together with Gurdeep Bumbra, Mark Mwangi and Tomás Pintó.

Paolini joined Pictet AM in 1997 as part of the developed equities team and has been a portfolio manager ever since. Before that, he worked at Pictet and Cie's research department, specialising in European equities research.

The biggest sector exposure in the fund is consumer discretionary (15.12%), followed by industrials (13.82%) and financials (12.99%).

According to the fund's July factsheet, the top three holdings are British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, satellite telecom company Inmarsat and Spanish engineering company Gestamp Automoción.

Over three years to the end of July, the Pictet-European Equity Selection fund returned 20.14%. Its technical indicator, STOXX Europe 50 CR EUR, lost 3.23% over the same period.

Nicolas Blanc, Exane Asset Management

Fund managed: Ellipsis European Credit Allocation Fund

Nicolas Blanc is head of allocation at Exane Asset Management. In 2006, Blanc set up a multi-strategy hedge fund in partnership with BNP Paribas, having previously worked in the French private bank’s derivative research team.

Over three years to the end of July, the Ellipsis European Credit Allocation Fund returned 2.88%. Its technical indicator, Citi European WGBI TR, returned 1.99% over the same period.

Stefan Meyer , Metzler

Funds managed: Metzler European Small and Micro, Metzler European Smaller Companies

Stefan Meyer manages two small-cap European equity funds at Mezler, alongside Citywire AAA-rated Lorenzo Carcano.

Meyer joined the firm in 2006 as senior equity portfolio manager and is a member of the equity strategy team. He previously worked at Sal. Oppenheim in Cologne.

According to the May factsheet, the biggest sectors in the Metzler European Smaller Companies fund were Industrial goods and services (16.88%), technology (13.71%) and financial services (10.02%).

Over three years to the end of July, the Metzler European Smaller Companies fund returned 42.96%. Its benchmark, STOXX Europe Small 200 CR EUR, returned 16.91% over the same period.

Cem Karacadag , Barings

Fund managed: Barings Emerging Markets Local Debt

Cem Karacadag has been in the industry since 1994 and has experience in credit analysis, macroeconomic policy research and advice, and emerging markets fixed income strategy.

He joined Barings in 2014 having previously worked for OppenheimerFunds, where he focused on sovereign hard currency and local currency investments in Eastern Europe and Asia. Before that, he worked for Credit Suisse, where he covered emerging market sovereigns in Asia and Latin America.

Over the three years to the end of July, the Barings Emerging Markets Local Debt fund returned 9.78%. Its technical indicator, Bloomberg Barclays EM LC Govt-10%CountryCap TR GBP, returned 3.03% over the same period.

Matt Evans, Columbia Threadneedle Investments

Fund managed: Threadneedle UK Smaller Companies Ret Net Inc GBX

Matt Evans, portfolio manager on UK-focused strategies, has been with Columbia Threadneedle Investments since 2003. Evans previously worked as a fund manager at Legal & General Investment Management, where he also specialised in UK small caps.

Over three years to the end of July, the Threadneedle UK Smaller Companies Ret Net Inc GBX fund returned 35.88%. Its benchmark, Numis Smaller companies (-InvTrust) TR, returned 14.76% over the same period.

Anthony Han, American Century Investment Management

Fund managed: American Century SICAV-Emerging Mkts Eq

Anthony Han has worked at American Century Investment Management since 2005. He started his career at the firm as a senior analyst and was later promoted to fund manager.

The biggest country overweights in his fund are China and Indonesia, while the biggest underweight is Taiwan.

According to the fund's July factsheet, stocks from China and Taiwan pushed up its relative results. One of the top performers was China-based TAL Education Group, which benefited from growing after-school tutoring services in the country.

Another strong performer in the fund was Sunny Optical Technology Group – the Chinese manufacturer of optical components.

Over three years to the end of July, the American Century SICAV-Emerging Mkts Eq fund returned 24.97%. Its technical indicator, MSCI EM (Emerging Markets) TR USD, returned 15.15% over the same period.

Niall Paul, TT International

Fund managed: TT Emerging Markets Equity

Paul joined TT International in 2011 and at the moment is head of international and emerging market equities at the firm. Prior to that he worked at Aviva Investors, where he was CIO of equities as well as head of emerging markets and Asia.

In his latest investment outlook for emerging markets Paul said he expects Chinese authorities to put more emphasis on supply-side reform. He added that 65m tonnes of steel production capacity was shut down last year, with a further 50m targeted for 2017.

He added that consumption in the country is further improving as retail sales rose 11% year-on-year.

Generally the fund manager is positive on emerging markets due to its positive urbanisation and demographic dynamics as well as improvement to the governance and regulatory framework.

Over the three years to the end of July the TT Emerging Markets Equity fund has returned 32.69%. Its technical indicator, MSCI EM (Emerging Markets) TR USD, returned 15.5% over the same timeframe.
