Methodology

Citywire Group Ratings are awarded to recognise the ability of a group’s managers to deliver consistently strong risk-adjusted returns in a given sector.

Where managers have moved to different funds or companies in the same sector, their track records are combined. A final score is generated biannually for each group on a sector by sector basis and a pool of best performing groups is formed.

Within that pool the ratings are as follows:
- The top 10% receive a Platinum award
- The next 20% a Gold
- The next 30% a Silver
- The remaining 40% are awarded a Bronze

Ratings are adjusted to reflect managers leaving and joining within the six-month update.

Pimco

Global bond house PIMCO has the second most managers in the sector with a combined total of over 30 years’ experience. Of their nine managers, Scott Mather, Andrew Balls and Eve Tournier have long enough track records to contribute to the sector’s only Platinum Rating. Mather is one of the current CIOs who took over in the wake of Bill Gross’s departure last September; Balls oversees the global specialist investment teams; and Tournier runs over $8 billion in the sector over her two diversified income funds.

GAM

A smaller outfit in the global bond space, GAM gains a Gold Rating from Daniel Sheard and Timothy Haywood’s consistent performance over the past four years. Sheard began his career at Schroders before joining Julius Baer to head up their Absolute Return strategies with Haywood. The pair plan to add convertible bond exposure to their GAM Star Dynamic Global Bond fund as they enter their 10th year running bond funds together.

Natixis Global Asset Management

Natixis Global Asset Management is awarded a Gold Rating. Bruno Crastes, founder of Natixis-backed H2O Asset Management, has exceptional long-term performance from both his time at Amundi and his current government bond currency plays at H2O. The trio of David Rolley, Lynda Schweitzer and Kenneth Buntrock run the Loomis Sayles Opportunistic bond fund. These four managers have a total experience of nearly 60 years between them, making NGAM one of the most experienced groups in the sector.
