Vontobel AM poaches corporates specialist from rival group

Vontobel Asset Management has hired Citywire + rated Christian Hantel from Swisscanto to manage a newly-launched bond strategy, the Swiss company has announced.

As lead portfolio manager of the new fund, called Vontobel Fund - Global Corporate Bond Mid Yield, Hantel will be supported by Citywire AAA-rated Mondher Bettaieb, who also manages the Vontobel Fund – EUR Corporate Bond Mid Yield fund, and Jamil Bouallai who will also serve as credit analyst.

Commenting on the new launch, Bettaieb, said: ‘Mid yield is one of the most attractive pockets within the credit markets. Over the past decades, we have seen considerable growth in this investment universe due to significant credit rating migration, today making up nearly 70% of the global index,’ he added.

Zurich-based Vontobel AM manages a total of US$20 billion across a range of fixed income funds and has bolstered its management team in the past 18 months with a streak of new launches and top hires.

Cross-asset macro specialist Ludovic Colin was hired from Goldman Sachs in June to join Citywire AA-rated Hervé Hanoune’s team, who serves as head of fixed income and is manager of the Vontobel Funds – Global Aggregate Bond.

The company said the Mid Yield Bond fund run by Bettaieb was one of the first funds to capture opportunities in the mid yield segment and Hantel’s new strategy will draw upon that success.

During his tenure at Swisscanto, Hantel, a global corporate credit specialist, was responsible for global and euro credit portfolios, multi-currency mandates and was also the lead manager of the Swisscanto Global Corporate Bond fund. Prior to his latest role, Hantel worked as head of corporate credit for BNY Mellon Asset Management.
